Abstract: Claire Keegan’s Small Things Like These examines the role of cultural memory at the individual level through the protagonist Bill Furlong’s personal awakening and reconstruction of identity. Against the historical backdrop of the Magdalene Laundry, the novel reveals how cultural memory shapes individual choices and identity formation. Through the implicit portrayal of the convent and the pervasive social silence, Keegan illustrates how cultural memory accumulates and resurfaces in everyday life.
