The Semiotic Analysis of the “Girl Catching Fire” in the Hunger Games
Abstract:
Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games successfully makes “Girl Catching Fire” the semiotic sign of an ideal modern woman. According to Charles Sanders Peirce’s Semiotic theory, the sign of “Girl Catching Fire” is the sign; Katniss is the object, and the thoughts caused by the sign is the interpretant. All these three parts constitute the process of signifying. The paper will firstly depict the major qualities of an ideal modern woman embodied by “Girl Catching Fire”, and then discuss the paradox carried by the sign so as to reveal its significant connotation involving the forever theme of survival, unyielding spirit and anticipation to human beings.
