Quest for the Meaning of Life in the Post-God Era: On Blood Meridian from the Perspective of Nietzsche’s Eternal Recurrence
Abstract: Blood Meridian is the masterpiece of Cormac McCarthy, a well-recognized American contemporary writer. From the perspective of an anonymous kid, the novel offers a poignant representation of historical slaughters that took place on the US-Mexico border during the 1850s. By looking into the eternal recurrence proposed by Nietzsche, this paper attempts to discuss McCarthy’s quest for the meaning of life in the post-God era and draws the conclusion that only by realizing the inevitability of the eternal recurrence and being willing to voluntarily and positively experience the recurrence, can one create the meaning of life and be the hero of life. Besides, the inclusive and humanistic concerns McCarthy shows in the novel may well indicate a promising way for the future development of American Southern Literature which suffers from a decline in the contemporary world.
