An Analysis of the Food-Power Mechanism and the Construction of Subjectivity in Oliver Twist
Abstract: Characterized by picaresque novel and bildungsroman, Charles Dickens’s masterpiece Oliver Twist narrates the story that ranges from Oliver’s being sent to the workhouse at the age of nine, through his being delivered to the coffin shop as an apprentice, to his escape to London and entry into the den, and then his being received by good-hearted people, discovering his identity and finally living a happy life. Food and drink play different roles in each stage of Oliver’s search for his real identity. The protagonist has diverse attitudes toward food in different situations. Adopting the emerging perspective of food studies in western literary theory and in virtue of the theory of cultural criticism, the authors try to analyze the eating scenes which change as the plots progress in the novel in order to reveal the close relationships between the protagonist Oliver’s eating practices and his efforts to break through his marginalized cultural identity and realize his individual subjectivity. The cultural symbols and human emotions behind eating practices are then unraveled as well.
