Nick Carraway’s Rebellion and Return to “A Sense of Fundamental Morality”—A New Analysis of a Character of The Great Gatsby

摘要: 菲茨杰拉德的《了不起的盖茨比》中，尼克•卡拉威具有独特的地位。尼克的叙述者的身份确保了这部作品成为一个结构紧凑的有机整体，而尼克的限知叙述又使得这部作品充满了戏剧性的悬念。本文认为，尼克•卡拉威除了在小说结构上有着重要作用，其本身的性格形象也十分值得品味。尼克是一个具有深度的理性、宽容的品质的知识分子，并且，这种理性、宽容的品质不是一成不变的，而是随着小说的情节进展逐渐成长起来的，这表现为尼克对“基本道德观念”的反叛与回归的过程。本文用矛盾分析的文艺理论方法分析了这一过程。

Abstract: In Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway has a unique position. Nick’s narrator identity ensures that the work becomes a compact organic whole, and Nick’s limited narrative makes the work full of dramatic suspense. This paper argues that Nick Carraway not only plays an important role in the structure of the novel, but also deserves to be analysed in his own character and image. Nick is an intellectual with deep rationality and tolerance. Moreover, the quality of rationality and tolerance does not remain unchanged, but gradually grows up with the plot of the novel, which is manifested in Nick’s rebellion and return to the “basic moral concept”. This paper analyzes this process by means of literary and artistic theory of contradiction analysis.
