The Relationship between the Characters’ Garments and Social Desires in Sister Carrie

摘要: 文学作品中的人物服饰描写通常体现了人物性格、风土人情和时代背景。小说《嘉莉妹妹》中，作者德莱塞通过对服饰进行更为精心化和个性化的突出，暗示了人物的等级关系、消费方式和价值观念，展现了在工业化影响下的社会分工、商品经济和道德人性。德莱塞认为：那些看似不公的物质差异和人物命运，是社会发展下适者生存的必然结果，欲望则是内在的催化剂。本文借助服饰在德莱塞小说中的符码象征意义，试探析服饰作为人类欲望之镜、生存之形、现实之掩三方面的表现，进而揭示人物对服饰的欲望中透露的社会欲求。

Abstract: Garments description is an effective means for writers to involve dispositions, customs, and am-biances. The elaborate and personalized descriptions of garments portrayed by Dreiser in the novel Sister Carrie indicate the social hierarchy, consumptive behaviors, and ethical values, ex-posing the division of labor, commodity economy, and human morality under the influence of in-dustrialization. Dreiser opined that economic inequality and human disparity, nurtured by the survival of the fittest, are considerably catalyzed by human desires. From protagonists' garments in Sister Carrie, this paper analyzes how Dreiser exerted exquisite garments depiction to demonstrate the source of desire, the law of survival, and the hide of reality, aiming to exploit human desires growing up with the suit pursuit.
