Antigones on the Edge: Judith Butler’s Interpretation of Gender

Abstract: Antigone has long been held up as a model of female resistance to state tyranny. Judith Butler ar-gues that many philosophers do not see him as a figure in the political realm, but as a pre-political realm. Hegel places kinship above the boundaries of the ethical order, above the boundaries of le-gitimate cultural norms; Lacan places Antigone above the boundary between the imaginary and the symbolic, using kinship as the norm guiding language and speech. On the basis of criticizing Hegel and Lacan, Judith Butler focused on the vulnerable, rejected and disintegrated marginalized people represented by Antigone, revealing the limitation and narrowness of cultural norms from the spe-cific situation of Antigone, and calling for the recognition of viable life through the ethics of nonvio-lence.
