Current Study on the Impact of Tolerance of Ambiguity on the Use of English Reading Strategies by High School Students
Abstract: Ambiguity is a common linguistic phenomenon, and students inevitably encounter various unclear language phenomena during the learning process. Tolerance of ambiguity, also known as “ambiguity intolerance”, is a cognitive style. Tolerance of ambiguity refers to the attitude of learners towards ambiguous and unfamiliar learning materials during the learning process. English reading plays an important role in the entire process of English learning, and students need to read texts to promote deeper understanding and thinking. In the teaching process, some high school teachers lacked training in reading skills, resulting in uneven reading abilities among students. So high school students showed different levels of tolerance of ambiguity. This article conducted research on the current situation of the impact of tolerance of ambiguity on the use of English reading strategies by high school students through literature search and organization. Finally, it found that the impacts of ambiguity tolerance on the use of English reading strategies by high school students are positive, negative and insignificant.
