Abstract: As the representative of American southern female writers in the 20th century, Katherine Anne Porter is famous for her profound and exquisite short stories. Based on the Southern society that was rebuilt after the Civil War at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Porter’s short story, The Old Order, shows the great changes in the gender division of labor and the awakening of women’s gender consciousness in the South around the life of the protagonist, Miss Sophia Jane. Through describing the female images of the old and young generations, Porter not only exposes and criticizes the oppression of the gender culture in the old society on the development of female self-consciousness, but also reflects her concern for women’s issues that pursue independent consciousness and gender rights.
