Abstract: Currently, there is a large gap between men and women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields, and women are underrepresented. With the reform of the new college entrance examination, students are faced with the problem of choosing their future majors and directions in high school. Gender stereotypes held by students can have an impact on their motivation to choose STEM majors. This paper summarizes previous research and finds that gender stereotypes affect students’ motivation to choose STEM majors and learn knowledge in these fields through ability perception (self-concept, self-efficacy) and interest.
