A Study on the Differences in Refusal Strategies in Gender Language from the Perspective of Face Theory

摘要: 语言是社会的镜像，深刻映射出社会的传统根基、风俗惯习及文化意识的内在精髓。鉴于人类天然存在的性别二元性，语言层面亦不可避免地展现出性别差异的痕迹。拒绝言语，作为一种本质上威胁个体面子的交际行为(即FTA，Face-Threatening Act的缩略)，往往促使表达者采取礼貌策略进行拒绝，旨在缓解对受话者面子的潜在冲击，从而维系双方关系的和谐与融洽。本文从性别维度深入剖析拒绝言语行为中潜在的差异性，并探索这些差异背后的成因机制。此研究不仅旨在增进对性别语言特征的理解，更期望通过揭示这些差异，为跨性别交流提供实践指导，减少因性别语言差异导致的沟通障碍，进而促进更加顺畅、高效的交际效果，实现更为和谐的社交互动。

Abstract: Language is a mirror of society, reflecting deeply the traditional foundations, customs, and inner essence of culture. Given the inherent binary nature of gender, language cannot help but leave traces of gender differences. Refusing to speak, a communicative act that fundamentally threatens an individual’s face (i.e., the abbreviation of FTA, Face-Threatening Act), often prompts the speaker to adopt polite strategies to reject the request, aiming to mitigate the potential impact on the listener’s face and maintain harmony in the relationship. This article analyzes the potential differences in refusal speech behavior from a gender perspective, exploring the causal mechanisms behind these differences. This study aims not only to enhance understanding of gender-specific language features, but also to provide practical guidance for cross-gender communication by revealing these differences, thereby reducing communication barriers caused by gender language differences and achieving more smooth and efficient communication effects, and promoting more harmonious social interactions.
