Abstract: This study investigates the impact of distress tolerance on game addiction and its mediating role through the sense of meaning in life. The research was conducted through an online survey platform involving 290 Chinese university students, utilizing the Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS), Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ), and Gaming Addiction Scale (GAS) for measurement. The results indicate a negative correlation between distress tolerance and video game addiction, with the sense of meaning in life playing a significant mediating role. Specifically, individuals with higher distress tolerance are less likely to be addicted to video games, and this tolerance reduces the risk of video game addiction by enhancing the individual’s sense of meaning in life. This study provides a new perspective for understanding the psychological mechanisms behind video game addiction and offers potential approaches for its prevention and intervention.
