Lone Survivor: Ishmael’s Healing from Trauma after Disaster in the Light of Narrative Techniques
Abstract: Ishmael, the protagonist of American romantic novelist Melville’s book “Moby Dick”, is not only a fictional character, but also the narrator of the novel. When studying the narrative features in “Moby Dick”, the academics have paid less attention to the psychological condition of Ishmael as the narrator of the novel in shaping the narrative features of the novel. Therefore, this paper combines the trauma theory and narrative theory to analyze the unsuccessful process of Ishmael as the narrator attempting to heal psychological trauma after surviving, in order to enrich the character image of Ishmael and interpret the unique narrative features of the novel.
