Death, Control, and Oblivion: The Deep Texture of Symbolic Imagery in “A Rose for Emily”

摘要: 威廉·福克纳被认为是20世纪美国文学最具影响力的作家之一，《献给爱米丽的一朵玫瑰花》是其极具代表性的作品。这篇文章以其独特的叙事方式以及丰富的象征意义著称。文章以象征主义理论为分析视角，采取文本细读方法，来深入探讨《献给爱米丽的一朵玫瑰花》中死亡、控制与遗忘三类核心象征意象及其深层肌理。研究发现，三类意象相互交织，构成了南方旧秩序在死亡边缘挣扎、依靠控制维系权威、借助遗忘麻痹自我的恶性循环图景，反映出福克纳对南方文化困境的批判与反思。

Abstract: William Faulkner is regarded as one of the most influential writers in 20^th century American literature, and “A Rose for Emily” is one of his most representative works. This story is renowned for its unique narrative style and rich symbolic meanings. By taking the symbolism theory as the analytical perspective and adopting the method of close textual reading, this paper deeply explores the three core symbolic images of “death”, “control”, and “oblivion” in “A Rose for Emily” and their deep texture. The study finds that these three types of images are intertwined to form a vicious cycle in which the old Southern order struggles on the verge of death, maintains its authority through control, and numbs itself through oblivion, reflecting Faulkner’s criticism and reflection on the cultural dilemmas of the South.
