Abstract: Jeanette Winterson’s The Gap of Time explores themes of time, forgiveness and love through a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. The novel introduces images, music and other media elements to the traditional narrative, using intermedial referencing strategies to break limits of the literary medium, thicken the novel’s capacity, and deepen its thematic expression. Through explicit and implicit intermedial references, Winterson creates numerous round characters and makes the emotional expressions more tense, thus better accomplishing the contemporary reconstruction of the classical text.
