The Thing Narrative in Gurnah’s Afterlives
Abstract: This essay explores the thing narrative in Gurnah’s Afterlives, using the concepts of “material unconscious”, “thingness” and “thing-power” proposed by Bill · Brown and related theories. By analyzing the cane, leather whip, books of Schiller, Geneva and coffee in Afterlives, this paper aims to study how these things constitute Hamza’s wartime trauma, generate meaning when Hamza is in the dilemma of identity and reveal the ruthless oppression of the African people by colonialism from three aspects: wartime trauma, identity dilemma, and colonial oppression in order to break the traditional human focus and constitute the thing narrative discourse system of the novel.
