Abstract: This paper explores the intertextual strategies between Go Down, Moses and The Reivers by William Faulkner, a prominent Southern American writer, from three perspectives. First, from the standpoint of textual reference, the transformation of the wilderness as an “object” reflects the evolution of Southern social order. While Faulkner ostensibly depicts changes in the physical landscape, he ultimately critiques the decline of Southern characters and civilization. Second, recurring character archetypes signify Faulkner’s narrative transcendence of time, creating a “polyphonic” dialogue between the two works. Additionally, the reconstruction of female identity subverts traditional portrayals in Faulkner’s earlier works, highlighting the effects of intertextual rewriting. Finally, through these two novels, the paper examines Faulkner’s philosophy of time, which embodies his nostalgic longing for the American South.
