小说翻译中“他者”的形象再现——以《无声告白》汉译本为例
The Representation of the “Other” in Novel Translation—Taking the C-E Translation of Everything I Never Told You as an Example
Abstract: In literary criticism, the “Other” typically refers to groups or elements that differ from the dominant or mainstream culture, often being marginalized or relegated to a non-mainstream position. In Everything I Never Told You, the Chinese American community serves as a representative example of the “Other”. This study conducts a character analysis of James, the Chinese American protagonist, examining how his “Otherness” is constructed in the original text and then investigating how this image is reproduced in the Chinese translation. Through a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the character’s portrayal in descriptions of appearance, actions, dialogue, psychological states, and indirect characterization, the study compares the original English text with its Chinese translation to assess whether the translator faithfully reconstructs the character’s image. The conclusion affirms that the translator successfully reproduces the Chinese American “Other”, highlighting both the protagonist’s personality traits and the struggles faced by the marginalized “Other”.
