Traditional Values Revisited—Narrative Strategy in “The Summer My Grandmother Was Supposed to Die” by Mordecai Richler

摘要: 本文分析了加拿大作家莫迪凯·里奇勒短篇小说《姥姥死去的夏天》中的叙事艺术，对在现代家庭背景下的犹太传统价值观进行批判性审查。通过分析第一人称叙述者的双重身份——既是故事亲历者又是家族史的记录者，文章揭示了里奇勒如何利用反讽技巧呈现传统犹太价值观在现代社会中的复杂面貌。同时，通过运用混杂的叙述视角，如儿童视角的真实感、“跳角”手法的情节推动作用，小说仍然肯定了犹太传统价值中的家庭观念，即个体应承担起尤其是对家庭成员的责任。

Abstract: This thesis analyzes the narrative art in Canadian author Mordecai Richler’s short story “The Summer My Grandmother Was Supposed to Die” to critically examine Jewish traditional values in the context of a modern family. Through analyzing the dual role of the first-person narrator—both the story’s participant and the family history’s recorder—the essay reveals how Richler utilizes ironic techniques to uncover its complexity in modern context. At the same time, by utilizing the mixed perspectives and shifting narrative time, such as the authenticity of the child’s point of view, the plot-driven effect of the alternation technique, the story still affirms the idea of family in the traditional Jewish values, that individuals should assume responsibility, especially for their family members.
