On the Imagery of “Fire” in Huang Jinshu’s “Old Home” Series of Novels

摘要: “火”的意象在黄锦树笔下多次出现，它是解读黄锦树小说的一把钥匙。黄锦树“旧家”系列小说中“火”的意象具有希望和毁灭双重象征意义。黄锦树用希望之“火”记载马华族群的奋斗历史和抒发对旧家和亲人的怀念；用毁灭之“火”再现马来华人生活中的恐惧和焚烧过去寻求再生。同时，“火”的意象也具有成为嵌套结构的核心和生发情节的叙事功能。

Abstract: The imagery of “fire” appears repeatedly in Huang Jinshu’s works, serving as a key to interpreting his novels. In Huang Jinshu’s “Old Home” series, the imagery of “fire” carries dual symbolic meanings of hope and destruction. Huang employs the “fire” of hope to document the struggles of the Malaysian Chinese community and express nostalgia for his old home and loved ones; while using the “fire” of destruction to depict the fears in the lives of Malaysian Chinese and the act of burning the past to seek rebirth. Simultaneously, the imagery of “fire” also functions narratively as the core of a nested structure and a plot-generating device.
