The Crisis of Modern Identity in Orlando
Abstract: In Orlando, Virginia Woolf presents the protagonist’s crisis of identity. The novel captures the tension between the inner liberation promised by aesthetic modernism and the inner constraints imposed by systemic modernity. As Orlando aspires to become a poet, he is increasingly suppressed by prevailing social norms and eventually falls into a state of nihilism. This paper approaches the novel from the perspective of systemic modernity, examining the underlying causes of Orlando’s identity crisis. It argues that the instrumental rationality emphasized by systemic modernity serves to repress human emotions and desires. Within the overwhelming current of history, the powerless individual is swept along, consumed by confusion and anxiety, with no firm ground to stand on. Woolf’s portrayal of Orlando’s identity crisis reflects the individual’s existential struggle caught between the forces of systemic modernity and aesthetic modernism.
