Abstract: This paper delves into the spatial narrative in Julian Barnes’ The Sense of an Ending, using the complex emotional relationship between the protagonist Tony Webster and Veronica as the focal point to explore the symbolic significance of space in their emotional evolution. Drawing upon Wesley Kort’s theoretical framework of cosmic, social, and personal space, the analysis provides a detailed examination of how the emotional bond between Tony and Veronica is gradually formed, estranged, and ultimately reconnected through the influence of these different spaces. By conducting a multi-layered analysis of space, this paper reveals that space in the novel serves multiple functions: it is not only the external backdrop against which the characters’ emotions develop, but also a metaphor and symbol for their emotional experiences. Tony’s emotional journey is intricately portrayed through the interplay of time and space, ultimately presenting a complex and philosophically profound emotional landscape.
