A Female Midlife Progress Novel—Rhetorical-Narrative Analysis of Mrs. Dalloway
Abstract: James Phelan’s narrative communication underlines the triangle interaction between author, text and audience, differentiating from the traditional criticism that either disconnected from social context or relied on subjective interpretation. Character’s Three Dimensions and Progression as cores of his rhetorical narratology provide fresh approaches on analyzing narrative structure and reader’s receptive reading as well as new perspectives into textual motif. Applying Phelan’s theory into a practical reading of Mrs. Dalloway, it is found that with the realization of Clarrisa’s mimetic function and the thematic and synthetic function of Peter and Septimus, instabilities and tensions like identity paradox of aging are generated in the progression. Thus, authorial reader could actively participate in the textual interpretation under the guide of implied author and discover a potential theme of female midlife progress novel.
