Abstract: Wuthering Heights is intertwined with strong love and hate, which inevitably leads to madness. Characters who are deeply trapped in the emotional quagmire can hardly control their own actions rationally, and they are coerced into saying things they don’t want to say, which eventually leads to an irreversible end. This paper takes Patrick Hogan’s theory of emotional narratology as an entry point to analyze the emotional structure and characters’ behaviors in Wuthering Heights, to explore the role of the emotional system in the narrative structure of Wuthering Heights, and to reveal how emotion affects the development of the story and realizes readers’ empathy. In Wuthering Heights, the complex emotions of grudges and feuds drive the storyline and shape the characters’ personalities, ultimately leading to a tragic ending. Through the lens of affective narratology, it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of the emotional dynamics and narrative structure in the novel and how they work together to create a deeper meaning in the literary work.
