Waves Crashed Upon the Shore—A Study of Body Narrative in George Saunders’ Lincoln in the Bardo
Abstract: The first full-length novel of American novelist George Saunders, Lincoln in the Bardo, profoundly explores the diversity and complexity of human experience. In the novel, body descriptions play a crucial role in characterization, plot development, and the deepening of thematic expressions. The spatial domains of physical existence, characters’ body transformations, possession, and other body phenomena constitute the core of the narrative. Centering on the body, this study examines the significance of body narrative through three dimensions: the spatial configurations of bodily storytelling, its visual and auditory representations, and the dimensions of traumatic healing. By returning to the essence of the body, literature not only reveals Saunders’ reflections on individual fate but also restores his concern for the universal human body.
