Abstract: As one of William Faulkner’s most renowned short stories, A Rose for Emily holds a significant place in literary history, largely owing to its profound symbolic layers and rich interpretive implications. The novel uses non-linear narrative and complex symbolic techniques to reveal the struggle and decline of southern society in historical changes, while also exploring the loneliness and despair of individuals in social changes and the tragic fate of individuals under the conflict between old and new cultures. From the theoretical lenses of symbolism and defamiliarization, this paper offers a holistic analysis of the novel’s narrative framework, characterizations, settings, and material symbols. The primary goal is to unpack the complex emotions and ideological messages that Faulkner embeds within the story’s core, as well as to illuminate the multiple symbolic meanings woven into the text’s defamiliarized narrative. Through this analytical approach, the paper further articulates the profound social critique and humanistic concern inherent in Faulkner’s writing, ultimately providing readers with a fresh framework for interpreting the work.
