An Interpretation of the Mother Archetype in Elizabeth Willard from Winesburg, Ohio
Abstract: This article analyzes the character of Elizabeth Willard in Sherwood Anderson’s masterpiece Winesburg, Ohio through Carl Jung’s theory of the mother archetype. Elizabeth has both “loving” and “terrible” qualities: her “loving” aspect is reflected in her selfless devotion and sacrificial love for her son George, while her “terrible” side is manifested in repressed homicidal impulses, a pathological obsession with death, and mental decay. She personifies the “decaying Earth Mother” archetype—her broken-down hotel symbolizes the exhaustion of her vitality, while her attempts to nurture George and her self-destructive tendencies form a sharp contradiction, revealing the tragedy of individual spiritual alienation in an industrial era. As a key influence on George’s growth, Elizabeth’s distant and silent motherhood not only triggers his sexual psychological conflicts but also facilitates his coming-of-age awakening through death. Ultimately, Elizabeth’s tragedy represents not only the fate of an individual but also the alienation and distortion within the spiritual wasteland of Winesburg residents in the industrial era.
