Demystification of Illness and Reconstruction of the Subject: The Narrative of Psychological Space in The Wings of the Dove
Abstract: This paper takes Henry James’ The Wings of the Dove as the object of study. Grounded in Fauconnier’s mental space theory, it focuses on the growth of the subject in Milly’s experience of illness. This study aims to address the limitations in the academic field, where there has been an overemphasis on narrative techniques and moral themes, while neglecting the value of the psychological impetus of illness and the application of mental space theory. Employing the framework of “mental space narrative,” this research deconstructs the artistic space in Venice, Kate’s utilitarian space, and Merton’s moral space. It reveals the mapping and integration mechanism of “separation-penetration-reconstruction” among these three spaces. During the interaction of these spaces, Milly’s perception of illness evolves from being a “gazed-upon object symbol” to a “driving force for subject construction.” Her mental space transitions from fragmentation and passivity to integration and autonomy, thus achieving the demystification of illness and the reconstruction of the subject. This study validates the explanatory power of this theory for literary texts, offers a new perspective for the interpretation of The Wings of the Dove, and showcases James’ esteem for the value of life and his anticipation of a sound humanity.
