Abstract: Paolo Bacigalupi, an outstanding American science fiction writer born in 1972, has earned widespread acclaim for his distinctive creative style and profound reflections on thematic ideas. His debut novel The Windup Girl presents us with a human society deeply trapped in an ecological crisis through its meticulous depiction of a future post-apocalyptic landscape. Material ecocriticism emphasizes attention to and respect for the material world, arguing that matter is not merely a passive entity but also possesses its own agency and significance. In The Windup Girl, Emiko’s material agency is manifested in her adaptation to the environment, her resistance against humans, and her recognition of self-identity, among other aspects. Her existence not only challenges the notion of human priority but also offers us new perspectives and ways of thinking. From the perspective of material ecocriticism, this paper will explore Emiko’s material agency and the generation of its significance in the novel, and further examine the reconstruction and unification between her material existence and significance.
