The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch through Heidegger’s Lens —The “Shadow” of Technology and the “Glimmer” of Humanity
Abstract: Philip K. Dick’s novel, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldridge, forms a deep dialogue with Heidegger’s existentialist philosophy of technology through the portrayal of a world monopolized by the partnership of technology and capitalism, showing that human beings, under the influence of “Challenge”, use technology to turn everything, including themselves, into “useful” “Standing-reserves” and form a “system of objects”. This process can also be interpreted as “Enframing” or what Heidegger sees as the essence of technology, which partially obscures the real “being” of people and things. This triggers a reflection on the nature of “technology” and “human being” in the novel, and ultimately, through a close reading of the text, the article finds that underneath the darkness and emptiness of the world depicted in the novel, there is a hint of the humanistic colour of the postmodernist writer Dick, revealing the message he wants to convey to the people in the post-human era: that even in the face of technological overdevelopment and mysterious and unknown creatures, we should still have a strong faith in our human beings.
