An Analysis of Philip through Bachelard’s Poetics of Space—The “Non-House”, the Deficient Body, and the Closed Inner Self in Of Human Bondage
Abstract: Of Human Bondage is a classic novel by W. Somerset Maugham, which holds an important place in literary history due to its profound psychological portrayal and exploration of human nature. Through the protagonist Philip Carey’s journey of self-discovery, the novel reveals the struggles and dilemmas faced by individuals in their quest for self-identity and inner liberation. This paper adopts the perspective of Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space to examine the symbolic meanings of the “non-house”, the deficient body space, and the closed inner self in the novel, and further analyzes how Philip reconstructs a poetic space that enables the rebirth of his subjectivity. By analyzing the interactions between these spatial elements and the characters’ emotions, this study uncovers how Maugham uses the symbolism of space and the emotional mapping of characters to depict Philip Carey’s pain and growth in his pursuit of self-identity, emotional relationships, and social interaction. Through this analysis, the paper further reveals the social critique and humanistic concern embedded in Maugham’s work, offering readers a new interpretive perspective and a deeper understanding.
