Abstract: The novel The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan offers a profound depiction of the individual states following the disintegration of family structure, revealing the traumatic experiences lurking beneath the surface of growth and order. This paper focuses on the language of trauma in the text, exploring how the novel reproduces and attempts to repair trauma through its narrative structure, by examining the metaphorical representation of trauma, the distortion of temporal and spatial frameworks, and the dual mechanisms of physical and psychological recovery. Furthermore, it discusses the ethics and possibilities of literature as a medium for traumatic narration. The significance of The Cement Garden extends beyond its label as a “Gothic horror story”; it also reflects the author’s revelation of human nature, his strong sense of social responsibility, and his humanistic concern. The trauma experienced by the characters in the novel illuminates the existential dilemmas of humanity in postmodern society and embodies the author’s exploration of modern human conditions. The study of the characters’ traumatic psychology in The Cement Garden further deconstructs the text and provides new perspectives for interpreting the novel.
