The Dynamics of Gaze and Subject: A Study on the Reconstruction of Power Structures in Jane Eyre
Abstract: This study, based on the gaze theory, analyzes the power structure in Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre, with a focus on the predicament and resistance of female characters in the visual power relationship. Through close reading of the text, this article explores how the protagonist Jane Eyre gradually formed her sense of subjectivity on the three levels of physical autonomy, economic independence and spiritual equality, and strove for her own discourse space through the practice of counter-gaze, which ultimately achieves a dynamic process of power balance. This study traces the growth trajectory of Jane Eyre, from a solitary subject of confinement in Gateshead House’s “Red House” to an awakened one who declared “You and I are equal” in the dialogue between Thornfield and Rochester. She gradually transforms from a young girl passively subjected to the disciplinary gaze, to an independent individual who dares to resist the male gaze while embracing the obligations of love and responsibility. Notably, in Jane Eyre, the gaze has a dual nature. It operates not only as a means of exerting power but also as a crucial impetus for women’s self-reflection and the reconstruction of their subject power. Research reveals that the reconstruction of the subject power in Jane Eyre not only demonstrates the possibility for women to achieve self-empowerment amid the tension between inequality and resistance, but also offers a compelling literary case for examining the evolving interplay of gaze, subjectivity, and power within broader cultural frameworks.
