Abstract: This thesis explores the hypocrisy of charity in the workhouse in Oliver Twist, applying Bill Brown’s theory of thing narrative. By analyzing items such as the thin gruel, clothes and Oliver’s indenture in Oliver Twist, it examines from three aspects—food abuse, oppression from the upper class and violation of human rights—how the things in Oliver Twist reveal the hypocrisy of the charity organizations centered around workhouses in the Victorian era. Based on existing research, this paper offers a new perspective on thing narrative and constitutes a thing narrative discourse system of the novel.
