囚笼与重负——《献给爱米丽的玫瑰》的存在主义解读
Cage and Burden—An Existentialist Reading of A Rose for Emily
摘要: 威廉·福克纳的短篇小说《献给爱米丽的玫瑰》不仅描绘了美国南方贵族传统的衰亡，更深刻揭示了个体在他人凝视与自由选择之间的存在困境。本文以法国哲学家萨特的存在主义哲学为理论框架，通过文本细读，分析“他人凝视”的外在压迫与“自为存在”所固有的自由与责任如何共同交织并最终导致了爱米丽的悲剧。本文亦旨在为解读该经典文本提供一个基于存在主义哲学的新颖视角。
Abstract: William Faulkner’s short story A Rose for Emily not only depicts the decline of the aristocratic tradition in the American South but also profoundly reveals the existential dilemma of individuals between the gaze of others and the burden of free choice. This paper employs the existentialist philosophy of French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre as its theoretical framework. Through close reading of the text, it analyzes how the external oppression of “the gaze of others” and the inherent freedom and responsibilities of “being-for-itself” intertwine and ultimately lead to Emily’s tragedy. Hopefully, this paper offers a novel interpretation of the classic text grounded in existentialist philosophy.
