The Half-Awakened Female Consciousness—Beginning with an Alternative Possibility for the Ending of Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour
Abstract: Kate Chopin’s short story “The Story of an Hour” has long been regarded as a representative work of feminist awakening. However, this paper explores another possibility in the story’s ending to examine the female consciousness in the story—a state of awareness without awakening (an unfinished and limited awakening). The ending of Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” depicts Mrs. Mallard being diagnosed as dying from the joy that kills. The mainstream view holds that Mrs. Mallard, after her awakening, could not bear the tremendous blow of being re-subjected to the repression of the patriarchal environment and dies in shock and despair; Kate Chopin’s creation of such an ending is, in fact, a satire on the extreme oppression of women in a patriarchal society. Admittedly, Kate Chopin employs the artistic technique of irony in the story’s ending, yet this irony would reach its peak in another possibility of the ending: that Mrs. Mallard does indeed die from “the joy that kills” upon her husband’s return, and her “joy” precisely highlights that her female consciousness remains only in a hazy perceptual stage, lacking genuine critical cognition and potential for action. This paper, drawing on the background of the development of American female consciousness, Kate Chopin’s diaries and other works, and starting from the ending, aims to reveal the misinterpretation of simply categorizing this story as a “manifesto of female awakening,” point out its susceptibility to later ideologies and critical paradigms, and ultimately demonstrate that “The Story of an Hour” presents a limited female consciousness that germinates within a repressive structure yet fails to break through its constraints.
